Mary Ronayne | Utopian Portraits: Monaco

5 - 31 July 2023
HOFA, at the Palais de Scala, Monaco, in collaboration with Monaco Art Week under the High Patronage of H.S.H Prince Albert II of Monaco, presents a solo exhibition by Irish artist Mary Ronayne.

Mary Ronayne cultivates comedy, wit and fun, working with farcical elements such as melting faces and acidic colours to create works that celebrate the fluidity of time, identity and life. Juxtaposed with scenes drawn from historical narratives and classical literature, they affirm the enduring elements of humanity in a carefree spirit.

Her technique of combining enamel and domestic paints is as much to credit for her charming style as her widely sourced subject matter. It plays a major role in the look and finish of her works which often contrast a glossy, vitreous shine with a more staid, matte texture. Drawing inspiration from a rich and diverse universe that includes magazine cut-outs, classical art, historical literature, movies, plays and operas, Mary's artworks are a tribute to life.
