‘Artificial Consciousness’
For our 2024 booth, we would like to exhibit award winning, multidisciplinary artist Sougwen Chung, who is internationally recognised as a pioneer of artificial intelligence within the contemporary art world, as she utilises technology reproduced gestural drawings to explore the correlation and communication between human and machine.
It is the moments of mysteries and complexities that propel Sougwen Chung’s practice, as she engages in mark-making in collaboration with robots, where unpredictability is often the outcome although, simultaneously, determines the narrative.
Addressing artificial intelligence as something that is occasionally fraught with controversy, Sougwen process enlightens a sense of artificial consciousness. She is compelled by our human capacity to anthropomorphize our relationship to machines, particularly robots, and how they can effectively reflect how we view ourselves and our own interactions with others.
Consequently, it is an advanced stage for examining authorship and agency - demanding to question who is in control, who do we want to be in control, how far can we monopolise and progress its purpose?
